What does this mean in practice?
Through MQTT, RFXCOM can be combined easily with Node-RED. RF events become flow triggers and commands can be sent back to the RFX.
RFXCOM is often used to connect existing wireless devices to modern smart-home systems. The main advantage is that existing 433 MHz or 868 MHz devices do not have to be replaced immediately. You use the RFX as a bridge between RF devices, MQTT and systems such as Home Assistant.
When is this relevant?
- You want to keep using existing sensors, switches, motors or weather stations.
- You want to connect devices to Home Assistant, Node-RED, Domoticz or custom software.
- You are looking for clear information about protocols, frequencies, compatibility or firmware.
Best practice
Enable only the protocols you need, use a stable power supply, give every RFX a unique Hostname/MQTT Client name and always check whether motors use rolling codes. Enable Auto Discovery temporarily while adding devices and disable it afterwards.
